Preparing a laboratory for student or staff turnover
A practical checklist for research laboratories that want operational continuity before the next graduation cycle.

Turnover is predictable in academic research. Treating it as an operational event — not only an HR event — reduces the cost of every transition.
Before someone leaves
- Locate shared stocks and personal collections that others will inherit.
- Capture freezer and cabinet maps that currently live in memory.
- Document recurring workflows and who owns them.
- Note incomplete experiments, open orders, and hazard-relevant materials.
- Transfer access intentionally — not by forwarding passwords or informal notes.
When someone joins
- Give them a workspace view of locations and shared resources on day one.
- Pair inventory search with a short onboarding checklist.
- Assign a human mentor and a durable operational source of truth.
- Avoid rebuilding the map from chat history.
What “good enough” looks like
You do not need perfect records. You need searchable locations, clear ownership, and handoffs that survive the people who wrote them.
Ouro Labs focuses on that continuity outcome: inventory and workflows that remain useful after the next graduation cycle.
